May 14 -- Erie, PA: It was a beautiful day in Erie. Warm and sunny. Not the typical May day. First I went to the old public dock which is now named Dobbin's Landing as it was in the 1800's. The dock is certainly different than when I was living in Erie. The Bicentennial Tower is new with great views of the harbor. There is a Maritime Museum, the library, the bus station, and, of course, U.S. Customs for the freighters coming in. The Niagara has been made seaworthy is now docked in the bay. After the quick tour around the downtown dock area, I went to Presque Isle State Park, or as the locals call it: The Peninsula. The drive around the Peninsula is about 14 miles with about 7 miles of beaches. This was where we spent a lot of time as kids. A ferry ticket was cheap then. Don't know what they run now, but hopefully, they are still affordable. Naturally, while I was in Erie, I visited my sister and my visiting nephew. I'll stop on the way back, too. It was such a beautiful day and nice to see the old sites, but tomorrow I'm on to some new ones. Don't imagine I'll have a lot of pictures tomorrow. It is over a nine hour drive to Danvers, Mass., but, who knows, I might have some stories. | |||||||
